Common Reasons Why a Toilet Clogs

November 16, 2020

Why Does My Toilet Always Clog?

When you’re a homeowner, one thing seems to be unanimous: the toilet will clog at one point or another. And while a bell-shaped plunger can help solve the problem, you may be curious as to why your “throne” sustained a clog in the first place.

While there are many reasons why your “porcelain chair” becomes clogged, here are a few of the most common reasons why toilets form blockages at the most inconvenient times.

How Do Toilets Get Clogged?

Flushing Foreign Objects

When it comes to your toilet, only two things should be flushed down it: toilet paper and human waste. While this rule may seem self-explanatory, there are some homeowners (and their guests) that would like to attempt to flush foreign objects down the “throne.”

Some items that should never be flushed include, but are not limited to:

  • Garbage

  • Paper products (i.e., paper towels)

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Male contraceptives

  • “Flushable” wipes

If any of these items come in contact with your toilet, they can cause a pretty severe blockage in the trap (the opening in your toilet) and cause a plumbing nightmare to occur that even a plunger wouldn’t be able to handle.

Hard Water is Present

Suppose you’re practicing good plumbing habits and don’t flush any foreign objects down your toilet — but it still clogs anyway. This could indicate that hard water may be the root of the problem.

As it turns out, hard water is high in mineral concentration — and when this is the case, those minerals can calcify. When this happens, this can cause a blockage and make it difficult for anything to pass through the trap.
